The Make For Baby Blog
Subscribe to the Make For Baby Blog RSS FeedPink for Girls, Blue for Boys? Poll
An interesting article was published recently in the Guardian newspaper. It is about the history of the color tradition of pink for girls and blue for boys. The article references the fact that in 1918, the Ladies Home Journal gives the advice that "the generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger colour, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.". How times have changed!
So, this got me thinking about the colors that we associate with boys and girls, and the relevancy of this in modern life.
What do you think? Take part in our poll and share your opinions with others!

Kid's Color Trend for 2010
I have been looking with interest at this Informat Trends report - Kid's Color Trends. It is really interesting to look at the different colors that are going to be hot for children's home furnishing, interior design and clothes. While in my house things are a bit 'anything goes' I do enjoy looking at the equisitely designed palletes that designers use.
If you are planning on making decorations for a nursery or are simply looking for ideas then check out our brand new Baby Nursery Craft Project category and do let us know of any nursery craft projects that you feel we should be including.

Some Technical Problems
We're back and working again after more than 13 hours offline. We do apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Our web hosting company informed us last week that they would be moving Make For Baby and her sister sites, FreeNeedle, Make For Christmas and Make For Business, to a new web server and we should be aware that the site would be offline for about five minutes.
Unfortunately they seem to have under estimated the true downtime somewhat.
Hopefully everything will continue to run smoothly and Make For Baby users won't experience any further problems.

Baby Blanket Contest
You have until December 1st to enter Naturally Baby, the AC Moore and NaturallyCaron.com baby blanket contest.
More information about the contest can be found here - NaturallyBaby.com
To enter, the blanket must be original and not a copy of something else - however to get inspiration and ideas why not take a look around our blanket section. This might give you some great ideas for your own unique creation.
Good Luck - this is a tremendous charity to support!

Sock Monkeys for Baby
Sock toys are a good way to make a toy with a difference for a baby. Cotton or wool socks are made from natural yarns and there are no fears of chemicals from inks or varnish.
There are lots of free instructions and patterns available - here are some tips to help make sock toys that are perfect for a baby:
- Do not use buttons or other small items for eyes. Embroidery will work well and give you a great degree of flexibility over features
- Make the limbs thin enough so that baby can grab onto them
- Use a stuffing that is recommended for baby toys

Sewing Baby Carriers
There are lots of great patterns and projects for making baby carriers. We've collected a huge selection which you can find in our Baby Carrier category. This includes baby carriers to sew and to crochet.
Making baby carriers is quite simple, however one of the most important things is to ensure that top quality rings are used. Companies such as Sling Rings, sell rings that have been specially sourced and are suitable for baby carriers.
It is important, also, to pick materials and fabrics that are suitable for baby carriers. Very shiny or slippy fabrics might not be practical. Good qualities cottons are robust and hard wearing and organic alternatives are often readily available.

Baby Things to Make For Summer
Baby projects are great for summer crafting. Being small, they are quick and easy to produce and are also easy to pop into a bag and carry off to the beach or on a day trip.
We've lots of new baby clothes projects listed and when sewn in a light cotton, or knitted or crocheted in fine yarns, these are ideal for a summer baby. Take a look at our free baby clothes sewing, knitting and crochet pattern directory for more ideas.
Don't forget that the databases are fully searchable, and if you want to narrow the patterns down that you are looking at so that they can be seen by craft, simply use the 'select craft' box in the middle of the page.
